Katie's Save the Cassowary 10th birthday party

We are inspired by this young eco warrior – Katie from Perth. She recently celebrated her 10th birthday and asked us to supply her with 20 of our 'Save the Cassowary BioCups' for her cassowary-themed birthday party. In lieu of birthday presents she asked for donations for Rainforest Rescue’s Cassowary Conservation Program. The results: 53 rainforest seedlings planted in last month by our very own Director, Richard Fine and his family.

In 2014 we released our Save the Cassowary BioCup in partnership with Rainforest Rescue. Our aim was to raise awareness and funds for this ancient and endangered bird, living the The Daintree National Park in Queensland. 20% of profits of cup sales went to Rainforest Rescue to use in its cassowary conservation initiatives – habitat protection through land buy-back and habitat restoration.

And this month we are delighted to tell you that Katie's superb cassowary-themed party was a huge success and they raised much needed funds to help support these beautiful, prehistoric wonders of the world.

Katie says "I had a lot of fun at my party and I am happy with how much I raised which was $535. When I was a baby I got a fluffy cassowary toy from my family in Queensland and that is how my passion started. They are very special birds and need to be protected to look after their species and help the rainforest too."

What an inspiring story. Kristin Canning from Rainforest Rescue gives their "warmest thanks to Katie and all her birthday guests for donating to Rainforest Rescue and helping us save the endangered Southern Cassowary!

"Katie and her party guests have enabled Rainforest Rescue to plant an awesome 53 rainforest seedlings on protected Rainforest Rescue land – prime habitat for the endangered Southern Cassowary! It just so happens that BioPak Director, Richard Fine and his family were some of the volunteers planting these trees, photos above."

"This is incredibly important as the biggest threat facing cassowaries right now in the Daintree is availability of regenerated habitat – that is, land that has lots of trees on it and is not bare and devastated. If a cassowary and its family does not have extended safe habitat to live, it will travel to other areas and then possibly be hit by cars on the roads. Rainforest Rescue will ensure the seedlings planted on behalf of Katie and her birthday guests will not only further extend prime cassowary habitat, but will also be food sources for the cassowaries, in that when the seedlings bear fruit, they can eat them and feed their young!"

"Thank you so very much again to Katie and all her birthday guests in helping Rainforest Rescue Protect Rainforest Forever and saving the endangered Southern Cassowary!"
